A person is guilty of this offence if he dishonestly appropriates property belonging to another with the intention of permanently depriving the other of it. These offences involve an element of dishonesty. Sentencing is impacted by not only the value of goods stolen but also what role a defendant plays in the commission of such offences. For example, a person could be asked to look after a cardboard box for their friend, and unbeknown to them this box could contain stolen goods. Such a person would be charged with handling stolen goods.
